Catherine Ford was raised in Bloomsbury by her mother and grandmother. In her early years Ford was diagnosed with an obsessive-compulsive disorder that caused anxiety due to word associations. Ford's passion for acting started as a child. She joined the National Youth Theatre. Ford was accepted into the Sylvia Young Theatre School, but decided after a week that she wasn't a good for the school. Ford rather than applying to Central School of Speech and Drama and getting a spot on her third attempt made an application and secured acceptance to Central School of Speech and Drama. Shaun Dingwall would play Pete Tyler, a regular character in Doctor Who. Ford could graduate in 1993. She already had her TV debut on a show in 1992 called Surgical Spirit. She adopted the title Catherine Tate. Tate was seen in television programs such as The Bill, Men Behaving Badly and London's Burning during the Nineties. Also, she was a regular performer in the theatre, eventually being a part of in the Royal Shakespeare Company for its 2000-2001 season. Tate's stand-up comedy that she started adding to her show in the year 1996, was soon gaining her admiration.
